Culture & CAT Capital of Europe
Included in official 2010 Istanbul catalog (www.istanbul2010.org is now closed):
Humorously titled, "2010 İSTANBUL: Culture & CAT Capital of Europe" exhibition photographs try to capture stray cats of the old imperal capital at historical and touristic locations. These beloved dwellers of many neigbourhoods are probably mix of breeds from many parts of the empire once stretched over three continents. Traces of the graceful, smart, moddy Angoras that appeared in 18th century European paintings, and the chalk-white, blue-eyed, free-sirited Van cats are also evident.
Adorable and friendly kitties, surely add charm to İstanbul; they may even be seen as one of its symbols. Furthermore, having such humane relationships with its stray animals is a notable character of İstanbul for it may present an alternative between the self-centered rationale of many developed cities and the negligence of others.
